Know what you’re replacing.

A slow crank, clicking, or electrical glitches on start-up usually mean your Ram 1500 needs a new battery. Most of these swaps take about 30 minutes. If your vehicle has Auto Start-Stop, it needs an AGM battery. On eTorque (mild-hybrid) trucks there is also a separate 48V battery pack behind the rear seat — never disconnect or service it. This guide covers the main 12V battery under the hood.

A little preparation first.

  • Match the group size and type on your old battery's label, or look it up by VIN at a parts store.
  • Engine off, key or smart key away from the vehicle, glasses and gloves on.
  • Note radio presets; some settings may reset.

One step at a time.

1Open the hood and find the battery

The 12V battery is under the hood. Remove any plastic cover over it.

2Disconnect the negative (–) terminal first

Disconnect the negative (–) terminal first

Loosen the black terminal and move the cable away from the post. If there's a sensor on the negative clamp, disconnect at the clamp, not the sensor plug.

3Disconnect positive and remove the hold-down

Remove the red terminal, then unbolt the hold-down with a socket and extension.

4Lift out the old battery

Lift out the old battery

Lift straight up with both hands — expect 40–55 lb — and keep it upright.

5Install the new battery

Install the new battery

Seat it the same way, refit the hold-down, connect positive first, negative last, and tighten both clamps.
