Know what you’re replacing.

If the washer stops with water in the drum, the drain path is blocked — most often the drain pump filter or a kinked hose. Since a washer won't spin until it drains, fixing the drain usually fixes the spin too.

A little preparation first.

  • Turn off and unplug the washer.
  • Have towels and a shallow tray ready — a lot of water may come out.

One step at a time.

1Drain the water

Drain the water

Open the small panel at the bottom front, pull out the short drain tube and let the water out into a tray.

2Clean the pump filter

Clean the pump filter

Unscrew the filter counter-clockwise and remove socks, coins and lint. Refit it tightly.

3Check the drain hose

Check the drain hose

Pull the washer out and make sure the hose isn't kinked or pushed too far into the standpipe.

4Check the lid or door lock

Check the lid or door lock

On top loaders, the lid switch must click when closed. A broken switch stops the spin.

5Balance the load

Balance the load

Redistribute heavy items and run Drain & Spin.
